First off, not everyone who lifts gets bulky, and that goes for men, too. Part of it is body type. There are very fit men who lift everyday who are not bulky, either because their natural physique doesn't allow them to get bulky, or because they work out in such a way that they develop "lean" muscle rather than "bulky" muscle. So, part of it is your body type, and part of it is the way you work out.
Will Lifting Weights Make Me Bulky?
No. One of the reasons why this belief is such a shame is that it prevents women from reaching optimal desired weight and fitness. Many women wish they could just lose that last ten pounds, or have a more toned stomach or glutes, but they don't realize that weights and strength training could help them get there.
If you find yourself shying away from weights because you are afraid of bulking up, you can leave that worry behind. One of the major factors in building muscle mass and girth is testosterone. Women simply don't have the testosterone levels that it would take to bulk up like a man does.
Lifting weights and doing a variety of strength training exercises will build lean muscle that helps your body burn fat and calories, even when the body is at rest. You WILL build muscle, but it will not make you bulky, instead you will develop a lean, toned body that looks healthy, not just skinny. You will enjoy a lower body fat percentage, because you will have more muscle.
Often women concentrate on reducing and burning calories, and then wonder why they still look out of shape even though they have lost weight. This is also known as "skinny fat." It is not the same as being healthy and fit.
