Study Proves Group Exercise Has Added Health Benefits

Birthdays are better spent with loved ones than by yourself. The same holds true for exercise – specifically, walking with a group.

In a recent study conducted by the University of East Anglia’s (UEA) Norwich Medical School, researchers determined that regular walks conducted with a group helped reduce blood pressure, resting heart rates and body fat levels.

Group walks also helped prevent strokes, heart disease, depression and even the recurrence of cancer in participants, the study indicated.

Benefits Of A Group

Being a member of an exercise group has many benefits for the individual. Exercise groups provide much-needed support and encouragement. As an individual, you do not have to worry about planning each workout session; the group has already done that for you. All you have to do is show up.

According to the study, those individuals who participated in group walks traveled further and faster than they normally would have on their own, displayed a more positive attitude towards exercising and felt less isolated and alone in their daily lives.

Physical Benefits Of Group Walking

In a separate study conducted by the British Journal of Sports Medicine, they looked specifically at walkers with obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease as well as a group of walkers with no negative health issues.

Their findings showed that participants in walking groups registered significant drops in blood pressure, weight, body fat and resting heart rate. Many participants also said they were less depressed than when they first started the walking program.

What This Means For You

As the research shows, joining an exercise group may have significant physical and mental benefits for your overall well-being. The trick is to find a group of like-minded people who are willing to commit to good health. You may already have a group of family and friends who are ready to take the next step on the road to optimal health.

If not, you are still in good shape (so to speak) as there are many exercise classes around the country; scan local bulletin boards (physical and digital) to find a group in your area. Another option is to check out your local gym and see if they offer group workout sessions.

In the Amarillo area, the Downtown Athletic Club offers over a dozen different group exercise classes for every fitness level. You’re sure to find a group activity to get you on the road to optimal fitness.

I really liked what you said about joining a group exercise class and having it help you lower blood pressure, weight, and your resting heart rate. My husband and I want to start going to a gym to improve our health, so we were discussing different options for classes we might take together or take separately. Thank you for the information about how sometimes you need to have a group class to help with the times you don't feel right and are depressed and the social support will help. That sounds like something I'll need!

It would be nice to just show up to the group exercise. Planning really isn't my strong suit. This way I could know that it would be planned for me.

It's good to know that groups and clubs help to provide support and encouragement when exercising. My wife has been wanting to get more into fitness, but she doesn't have a support structure. I'll pass this information along to her so that she can look further into the benefits of health clubs.

I found it interesting when you said that walking can benefit your health especially avoiding strokes and depression. One of my uncles has heart diseases and he is always looking for ways to treat his condition. It would be nice to find a specialist that can help him treat it.

It’s good that you point out that going to the gym is a great way to socialize. I’ve been looking for a new way to be more social, so I’m considering finding a gym to attend. I’m going to look for a good gym in my area.

I really love exercising because it makes me very fit. Every day, I always make sure I go through one or two exercise just to be fit before going out, this help me feel good and strong for the day, and also makes me feel more focused on what am doing. I believe that if you do not work out you would not feel as good as you should feel. I had no clue that exercising with a group within a gym or a specific area could help a person become motivated with their goals, thanks to their support. My brother wants to achieve his summer bod this year so that he could prepare for the next. I'll be sure to recommend that he look for a gym around his area.

It stood out to me when you said that group exercise classes can help the individual feel supported and encouraged. My sister mentioned she really wants to get in better shape but doesn't feel like she can maintain the motivation to actually see results. I'm glad I read your article so I can suggest she look for some kind of indoor group exercise class to start soon!

Lovely. But when our friends meet we used to chat rather than work out.
