Getting a massage is not only a relaxing and luxurious experience, but it is also beneficial for you both physically and mentally. Whether you have tense, knotted muscles as a result of a long week at the office, or you are experiencing soreness as a result of vigorous activity, massage is a way to heal and restore your body.

What kind of massage is right for me?

There are several types of massage to choose from, and you may not know which is best for you. It is important to choose the appropriate massage to get the best results. When in doubt, Swedish massage is generally a safe bet, but let's look at some of the other styles to better understand why one would be a better choice over another.

Deep tissue massage: A more in-depth massage than Swedish, deep tissue uses stronger pressure, slower strokes and goes against the grain of the muscle as well as with the grain. This method is great for releasing long-held tension in the muscles, and breaking up scar tissue in the muscles. Deep tissue massage can cause soreness both during and after the massage, although this is short-lived.

Deep tissue massage is not for everyone. If you are pregnant or have a current injury, or are particularly sensitive, you should probably go with a milder massage, such as Swedish.

Sports massage: This is fairly self-explanatory. Sports massage has components of deep tissue and Swedish massage, with the added benefit of stretching the muscles. This is an ideal massage for those who participate in sports, weight training and other physical activities. This massage helps to increase flexibility, which can help prevent injury. It help relieve muscles that are sore from activity, and can shorten recovery time. However you do not have to be an athlete to benefit from a sports massage.Prenatal massage: Created for Moms-to-be, pregnancy massage is gentle, yet effective. Your changing body will often yield more aches and pains and a massage is often a welcome relief. Extra care is taken, and typical problem areas get the attention they deserve.Hot stone massage: If you would describe yourself as a "ball of stress," hot stone massage may be for you. In addition to soothing and restorative Swedish massage techniques, this massage also uses both hot and cool stones to loosen tight muscles and reduce inflammation. The heat gives an added level of relaxation and works wonders on stressed bodies.

This massage is not ideal for pregnant women, or those who have diabetes or other conditions where there is a lack of nerve sensation.

Thai massage: Although massage is a relaxing experience, it can also have an energizing effect. This is the case with all styles of massage, but if you are feeling tense, sluggish and feel like you need a boost, this may be the massage for you. Thai massage combines assisted stretching and pressure points to improve circulation, flexibility and energy.
