Why Am I Supposed To Drink Water After A Massage
At this point you probably know that massage therapy provides many benefits for your health and well-being. From improved circulation to better sleep and mood, regular massage combined with good fitness and nutrition habits can help you feel and look your best. When you go get a massage, you may have wondered why the massage therapist advises you to drink water afterwards. You may have heard that massage releases toxins into your body, or that it dehydrates you. These are common questions, so let's take a look at the answers.

Will a massage make me dehydrated?

When your muscles are knotted up (which is probably why you are getting a massage) they trap water inside them. As the masseuse works and loosens the muscles, that water is released. It is then circulated and filtered out, which is one reason why drinking water after a massage is important, you need to replace that water. A massage stimulates circulation and organ function, drinking water will maximize these benefits.

In addition, it is a good idea to go into a massage being well-hydrated. Most people are dehydrated and don't even know it. Often, much of the muscle soreness you experience is due in part to being dehydrated. Muscle is 75% water, and being properly hydrated will make it easier for the massage therapist to manipulate those muscles.

Does massage release toxins into my body?

Most massage therapists agree that this is the case. With that said, there are varying beliefs about this, and it is not necessarily clear just what those toxins are. It does make sense that working the muscles may indeed release built up chemical waste into the body, and if that is the case, drinking water will definitely assist the organs in filtering and releasing those chemical toxins.

Bottom line: While there may be no hard scientific evidence that massage releases toxins into your body, a majority of experienced, licensed massage therapists believe this to be the case. And, medical professionals will all agree that proper hydration is essential to the body's function. If you become dehydrated, even just a little, it means that your organs, joints, muscles and cells are not getting what they need to function properly. This results in increased aches and pains, poor digestion, impaired brain function and overall poor health.

Drinking water before and after workouts, massages and daily activity is an important part of taking care of yourself. When you are properly hydrated, you will reap the most benefits from your other healthy activities. You will feel better, more flexible, more alert and more energized. So drink that extra glass of water before your massage, as well as after.
